Sitting at the popular table...bye bye GFC

I'm comparing losing google reader to a high school cafeteria table.
Losing google reader will ultimately result in losing the GFC gadget - and I'm pretty excited that number won't be over there on the sidebar...I think it'll force people to actually skim through your blog to determine whether or not they like it.

How does this compare to high school?

If you were to walk into a high school cafeteria and see 20 girls sitting at the same table, you would ultimately be drawn to that table - right?
Most people want to follow the "in crowd" - but if you're blindfolded and placed in the cafeteria, you would actually have to walk around and visit with people to determine whether or not you want to sit at their table.

So yay for no more google reader in my eyes; however, if you've already determined you want to sit at my table, feel free to follow me via {Bloglovin}

  2. I feel the same way! And it's good for us as writers to not focus on it!

  4. Very good analogy. It is true that I'm often intimidated by the big bloggers. Sometimes I also "judge" a blog by the number of followers it has. It would be kind of nice not to know.

  5. Have you tried or heard of Feedly? I really like it! Similar to Bloglovin but I feel like tree are more options and it is a little cleaner. All personal preference I guess. :)

  6. Hmmmm....Personally I think I'd automatically stay away from the cafeteria table with tons of people at it because I know that popular people typically aren't my kind of people. And that would make sense why the blogs I love the most definitely aren't the ones with 10,000 followers....I get it now! :)

  8. I love your perspective...I'm not too sad over it, more just annoyed because it's how I read blogs!

    Follow me on Bloglovin?

  10. I actually like the idea of not having the GFC gadget on blogs and therefore announcing just how many people "follow". It won't be so much of a popularity contest, like you say! I'm all for it. Love me some Bloglovin' :)

  12. Following you on Bloglovin, now! Because even if I were blindd-folded, I would want to sit at your table.

  13. Haha, NO. I stayed FAR away from the huge table with 20 giggling girls. I usually ate lunch in the theatre hallway. I was one of those kids, haha!

  14. i completely agree. this will hopefully have people engage more rather than look at simply numbers. :)

  15. So, if I don't do anything at all, will I still have my followers button and their pictures on my sidebar? Will I still be able to read your blog if I don't have a bloglovin account?? I'm so confused. In any event, I DO read your blog and would LOVE to dine with you over some cafeteria food.

    XOXO,
    Meredith

  16. I agree with you... The numbers on the sidebar do get distracting and sometimes I spend time actually trying to figure out why a blog is 'popular' when I don't think it's that great! Anyway, I like the analogy and I am now following you on Bloglovin' :-)

  18. Lol - I love this. Such a great analogy! I think it's always good to be reminded to blog for myself rather than to get more followers but I have mixed feelings about losing GFC.

I'll be following you on Bloglovin from now!

  19. That's a good point. Without realizing it, I think I have sometimes looked at the GFC number and if it's really small, I might be less likely to look around the blog and check it out. At the same time, I stopped writing my blog with 500 GFC followers and started a new one last fall. The GFC number is on that blog is about 42. I think that people see that small number and dismiss me as unpopular. Even though I like seeing the number grow on my own blog, it will probably help me in the long run.
